Steps to better health through whole foods & life style
Step 1 Educate Yourself
Step 2 Make a plan
Step 3 Take Your First Steps
Deciding to take responsibility for your health is a huge step and it's the 1st step. It starts with knowledge and education, becoming aware that you are in control of your health and that your decisions can make you healthy.
It all starts when you realize that your health can be restored. We have been told all our lives that "disease is part of getting older, it happens to everyone." We have been told that “if a disease is in your genes, there is no way around it, you are destined to get that disease.” Since then, science has discovered that this is not true. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard University, said,"Genes may create a loaded gun, but environment pulls the trigger," he said. "Small diet and lifestyle changes can make big differences. That provides us with a tremendous opportunity for prevention."
Yes, as we age, our bodies degrade, our knees start to creak, and our hair, if you still have any, gets grey. But cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and other maladies are, for the most part, in our control over whether you get them or not.
The cherry on top of this great news is that if you already have some of these diseases, you can reverse them or at least stop them from progressing any further. Yes, that’s right—reverse them and become healthy!
Does this all sound too good to be true? I thought it did, I was shocked to hear this and find it to be true. I believed that the only control we had over our health was the medication we had to choose from to treat the symptoms of our diseases.
As I said, education and knowledge are where it all must start. I am not talking about getting a P.H.D. in Nutrition or any other health-related areas of study. No, something much easier than that, educating yourself through reading, watching, and listening, to become more aware and knowledgeable.
Reading books, studies, and journals about healthy eating.
Watching online seminars and videos. Listening to the experts about how to eat and live.
Let's talk about the big, ugly word DIET for a minute.
You must come to understand that this IS NOT A DIET, it's a lifestyle and diet change that you will live the rest of your life. It's a holistic way to eat & live that will nourish and give well-being to every cell in your body without making you more unhealthy or damaging anything along the way. You will be healthier every day that you live this lifestyle.
Diets don't work because they are temporary, unhealthy, and unsustainable, and for the most part, focus on losing weight only. They are just not a healthy, sustainable way to live.
Diets like the KETO Diet, Carnivore Diet, Caveman Diet, Blood Type Diet, Zero-Sugar Diet, Atkins Diet, Paleo Diet, etc., are at best unhealthy, and some can even permanently damage your organs. You may lose weight in the short term, but you will gain it back once you stop the diet, possibly damaging your body along the way, ending up more unhealthy than when you started.
When thinking about health, we must think beyond weight. You must also think about your inner health, like the health of your heart, liver, kidneys, mind, etc.
Most people focus on outer appearance, on whether someone is overweight or not, muscle-bound or flabby, and make a mental decision on whether someone is healthy or not by appearance. They may have heart disease or liver problems that we don’t see. Disease is not always seen on the outside. Don't let yourself assess someone's health using this method, and please don’t assess yourself that way either.
Once you are educated, convicted, and committed to making the lifestyle change for a healthier & happier life. You are then ready to make a plan and take the first steps. Remember that everyone is an individual and are in different places in their lives, so not everyone will progress at the same pace. Most will even take a few steps backward before progressing forward again, and that's all right; life is made up of setbacks and gains. I will be the first one to tell you that my journey has been FULL of this type of progress. I am FAR from perfect when it comes to diet and my health. I can say, though and you will be able to say also that, "I am healthier today than I was yesterday." This was my statement of motivation for many years of my health journey, and I am hoping it will be yours also!
I have to say that some people are not "100% all in" and that's ok. If you have decided that you want to be healthier than you are right now, I say let's start the journey. As you learn and see your body react positively, you will become more motivated to learn more and continue to get healthier. This is why education and awareness are so important as the first step; it helps you commit and continue walking on this journey when you see hope for better health.
